Multifunctional Green Infrastructure in Shrinking Cities: How Does Urban Shrinkage Affect Green Space Planning?

Despite global urbanization, not all cities have increasing populations. While homogenous, shrinking arguably different opportunities and challenges for green space than growing cities. This article reports a structured content analysis to investigate how urban planning evolved in two case study cities: Buffalo (New York, US) Porto (Portugal). These both underwent shrinkage suburbanization but with very histories. The concept of infrastructure is used as lens analyze change, specifically focused on multifunctionality. aim investigating objectives priorities spaces change during period shrinkage, particularly what functions these assigned space, showed that, over time, were expected produce more ecological cities, and, Buffalo, contribute the economic demographic outcomes city. Overall trends appear played role we find may leverage meet unique needs. findings literature by addressing affects only vacant areas also overall planning, well suggesting that general studies should consider relevant context factor.
